“Pretty Little Liars” is the newest ABC Family show and star Lucy Hale (Aria Montgomery on the show) tells Zap2it about what viewers can look forward to this season.

The show revolves around four girls whose friend Allison went missing a year ago — or at least, they thought she did, until they start receiving messages from a mysterious “A” who knows things only Allison would know.

“We actually don’t know who ‘A’ is who is sending us these messages,” Lucy tells us. “We don’t know if it’s Allison, we don’t know where Allison is, if she’s dead or alive.”

Intrigue! So what can we look forward to over the course of the season?

“Throughout the season you’ll figure out what happened to her, who is sending us these messages and you’ll find out dark secrets about each of our characters,” Lucy teases.

“Each episode will end with a huge cliffhanger. We read the scripts and we’re like, ‘What?!?!’” she exclaims.

Well, that was quick. The usual lull between the end of regular season television and the beginning of summer shows is officially over beginning tonight, with the premiere of ABC Family’s newest show, “Pretty Little Liars.”

We’ve been looking forward to the series ever since we heard about it, but with each juicy preview and dirty promo poster, we’ve gotten even more excited for “PLL,” which looks like a cross between “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Desperate Housewives” with a little “Gossip Girl” thrown in for good measure (there is texting after all!).

But, before you tune in tonight, we wanted to make sure to give you the three major things you need to know…

1. IT’S BASED ON A BOOK SERIES

The show is based on Sara Shepard’s “Pretty Little Liars” book series, about a group of beautiful, rich high school juniors from the privileged town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania who have some very serious problems, not the least of which is finding out who killed their best friend. The drama begins when they receive a mysterious text message threatening to reveal their deepest, darkest, secrets. Scandalous!

2. THERE ARE FOUR MAIN CHARACTERS

Just who are these pretty little liars? Well, Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale) is a strong-willed, confident girl who has an eye for her English teacher and is trying to deal with her parents’ divorce. When MTV News caught up with Lucy a few weeks ago, she told us that “[Aria's] just going through a lot of issues with her family. Her dad is cheating on her mom, and that’s a lot to go through at a young age.” Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) turned into the school’s queen bee after their friend Alison disappeared, but is secretly dealing with an eating disorder. Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) is an overachiever who struggles to stand out from the shadow cast by her ultra-perfect older sister, Melissa. Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell) is “an athletic girl who is struggling with her sexuality,” according to ABC Family’s character description.

3. IT’S ON AN AWESOME, GROWING NETWORK!

If the juicy plot and amazing actresses aren’t enough to entice you to watch the premiere of “Pretty Little Liars” tonight, remember that the show is on ABC Family. Home, yes, to “Full House” and “Gilmore Girls” repeats (amazing!), but also to even more amazing original shows like “Greek,” “Make It Or Break It,” and the late, lamented (by me and at least five other people I know!) “10 Things I Hate About You.” “Pretty Little Liars” is just destined to be good.
