Demi Lovato has shut down her Twitter account, abandoned her post on The Jonas Brothers’ concert tour, and checked into rehab for treatment of what insiders say is an emotional breakdown.
Oh dear, damn that Joe Jonas! Getting dumped by that cad must have really done a number on the poor girl.
A rep for the Sonny With a Chance actress, 18, confirmed the move in a statement issued late Monday evening. Demi Lovato spokesfolks championed the teen star for seeking help for “emotional and physical issues” that have plagued her for months.
She reportedly famously fell out with childhood pal Selena Gomez after Selena grew closer to singer Taylor Swift. And it was just last week that Demi flipped into Full Rant Mode on celeb gawkers (You’ll know who you are!) who insists on posting unflattering photographs of her on their blogs. The final straw came over the weekend, TMZ.com tipsters say. That’s when Demi nearly got into a knockdown dragout fight with one of the dancers on her tour. The altercation was the wakeup call Demi needed to reach out for help.
“Demi Lovato left her tour early this weekend in order to seek medical treatment for emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time,” the statement read. “Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help. She is doing just that. [Demi] regrets not being able to finish her tour, but is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future.”
Disney sensation Demi Lovato, who has a history of eating disorders and cutting, has pulled out of an international tour with the Jonas Brothers to seek treatment at a rehab facility.
Lovato is getting “medical treatment for emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time,” the 18-year-old singer’s rep said in a statement.
The young star, who hit it big as the star of the Disney Channel TV movie Camp Rock, broke young girls’ hearts around the world when she shared a passionate screen kiss with Joe Jonas. The pair dated in real life, but the relationship came to an end earlier this year when Jonas chose to call it quits on the brief romance. Did the break-up contribute to what insiders are calling Lovato’s emotional breakdown?
Demi was only sixteen when she achieved celebrity status, and as we have seen with the public meltdowns of high profile stars such as Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, being under the limelight and constant scrutiny of the media can take its toll.
Eating disorders and self-mutilation are often used to help the individual cope with, block out, and release troubling feelings and emotions. Drink and drug problems often also come into play.
Let’s hope Demi receives the treatment she needs to get back on track. As her personal rep said:”Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help. She is doing just that.”
Demi Lovato Enters Rehab
Demi Lovato, the 18-year-old Disney star, has entered into rehab. Her rep confirmed to People magazine that she took a break “in order to seek medical treatment for emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time,” and apparently a source “close to the family” has said that Demi “fought through eating disorders and has struggled with cutting.”
First and foremost, I would like to state that I wish Demi the best and hope she makes a full recovery during what must be a very troubling time in her life. Beyond that, though, I’d like to open this conversation to something more important–this is not just about Lovato, but about something all girls in Hollywood, and in the world, face today.
Societal pressure to look a certain way, especially when it comes to weight, is something that we must work constantly to change. I know how difficult it is to be a young girl growing up in a world that tells you that the way you look is not okay, and I can only imagine how much that’s magnified when you step into the limelight.
Demi has been vocal about the fact that she was bullied in middle school, and how she also finds it difficult to be heavily criticized now that she’s famous. My hope is that people realize that celebrities are human; they are not immune to snark, hatred, and superficial criticism.
You can not imagine the amount of negative tweets commenting on my body that I got during the VMA Pre-Show; I am lucky that I have worked through my own issues with self-esteem and body image enough in the past that those tweets didn’t bother me, but I shudder to think if the “old Gabi” had to read such hateful things.
I know this blog post can’t change the world, but I am hoping that a few of you reading this might do some introspective thinking and contemplate how and why you think it’s okay to judge people based on the way they look. To Demi, and to any other girls out there struggling, my thoughts and best wishes are with you. (via)
Disney Supports Demi Lovato’s Decision to Seek Treatment
A day after news broke that Demi Lovato checked into a treatment center for “emotional and physical issues” and dropped off the Jonas Brothers’s tour, Disney has thrown their support behind the star.
“We support Demi’s decision to put her health first and we send her our best wishes,” a Disney spokesperson tells PEOPLE. Lovato’s Disney show, Sonny with a Chance, continues to be on a scheduled hiatus.
The star has been dealing with “emotional and physical issues … for some time,” her rep confirmed to PEOPLE, adding, “Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help.”
A source close to Lovato’s family told PEOPLE, “She was bullied in school. She fought through eating disorders and has struggled with cutting. … Demi is taking control by getting help.” (via)
