Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson is high on the search radar after making an incendiary comment about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. Filling in for Sean Hannity on Fox News, Carlson led a discussion about President Obama’s calling the Eagles’ owner and thanking him for giving Vick a second chance.

Carlson said,

“I’m a Christian. I believe in second chances. But Michael Vick killed dogs. I think personally he should have been executed for that. But he wasn’t. The idea that the president of the United States should be getting behind someone who murdered dogs is kind of beyond the pale.”

This was in response to President Obama’s reportedly praising the Eagles for giving Vick a second chance. Maybe I can make this make sense, because I am with him until the part where he says Michael Vick should be executed.

Billy Taylor, one of the musical treasures of Washington and the world, died last night, Dec. 28, at a hospital in New York City. He was 89 and died of a heart attack. Billy Taylor, an acclaimed jazz pianist and composer who became one of the genre’s most ardent advocates through radio, television and the landmark Jazzmobile arts venture.

Taylor died Tuesday of a heart attack in Manhattan, said his wife, Theodora Taylor. “He enjoyed his life,” she said. “Music was his love.”

Dr. Taylor, as he was known to one and all, was a first-rate jazz pianist who grew up in Washington and was a graduate of Dunbar High School. He moved to New York in the early 1940s and was present at the birth of bebop, the new vernacular of music that transformed jazz. He played alongside Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis and became a protege of the greatest jazz pianist ever, Art Tatum.

An armed man in a wheelchair took five hostages Wednesday at a post office in western Virginia, forcing officials to cordon off three blocks of a downtown filled with holiday shoppers. Local media reports say grenades have been found in the man’s vehicle parked outside the post office in Wytheville. Five people have been taken hostage in a post office in the US by a man in a wheelchair claiming to be carrying explosives, say reports.

The town mayor of Wytheville, Trent Crewe, told the Associated Press news agency the man had fired shots from the building but no injuries were reported.

Shots have been fired from the post office, according to people in the area. Police are at the scene and asking for people in a four block radius to evacuate the area. Police have cordoned off the scene and advised people to evacuate homes and businesses in the immediate area.
